It's Official! He's Coming Back

No, it's not deja vu, Sid's coming back - again! From the Pens' website:
Sidney Crosby is back again.

The Penguins captain will return to the lineup Thursday night when the New York Islanders visit Mellon Arena.

“I am playing,” he said. “My ankle feels great and my conditioning is as good as it can get, really, without playing. It always takes a few games, but I feel good.”

Suit up, Kid! You're going in.

Crosby has missed 28 games this season because of a high ankle sprain, including the past seven after coming back for a three-game stretch. Crosby feels much better in this comeback attempt than he did earlier in the month and thinks there is less chance of aggravating the injury again.

“I feel confident. I think it’s one of those things that will come down to luck, but I feel strong,” he said. “I feel a lot better than I did coming back the first time. I am more confident and that’s big.”
YES!!! WOOOOOOO!!!!!! BRING ON THE ISLANDERS, 'CUZ SID IS BACK, JACK!!!

LET'S GO PENS!!!

One Step Closer

Sid's looking at rejoining the Pens' lineup as early as tomorrow! From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dave Molinari:
Sidney Crosby seems optimistic that he will be back in the Penguins' lineup when the New York Islanders visit Mellon Arena tomorrow night.

"That's definitely a possibility," he said yesterday. "I'd definitely like to play that game."

Crosby, who is nursing a high ankle sprain, participated in the Penguins' game-day skate at the Prudential Center, then stayed on the ice for extra work with assistant coach Mike Yeo.

When he returned to the locker room, Crosby was sweating profusely, with no indication the flow of perspiration was going to slow anytime soon. [snoop: QUICK! Someone get him some Axe body spray...]

We're THISCLOSE to seeing this again...

"This is a lot harder than playing, when you have to deal with this every day," he said. "I'm looking forward to getting back. It's just conditioning, to make sure I'm in shape. I feel pretty strong, as far as the ankle goes."
This is most welcome news for two reasons. First and foremost, it's a good move now that the Pens have clinched their playoff berth to give the Saint some time with his new linemate, Marian Hossa. It's necessary to give them a few games to get a rhythm going before the playoffs begin. You don't want to see it take them 3 or 4 games to get acclimated to one another when they're playing in a best of seven series, that's for sure!

Secondly, this bodes well for me for purely selfish reasons, as my husband and I will be attending the last home game of the season. :) So if for some reason I'm not lucky enough to get my hands on playoff tickets, it will be the last time this season that we'll get to see Sid in action.

Thanks go out to good Friend of The Show Bill in NS for alerting me to this development.

No Sid Tonight

I hope everyone had a nice holiday! It seems that Sidney is close to being ready for a second return, but it won't be in time for tonight's game. From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Sidney Crosby won't be in the Penguins' lineup when they try to clinch a playoff berth this evening.

Don't call it a comeback - at least not yet...

Crosby participated in the Penguins' game-day skate at Nassau Coliseum, but pronounced himself not ready to return for tonight's game against the New York Islanders at 7:08. Crosby said he will "not necessarily" rule himself out of the Penguins' game at New Jersey tomorrow.
(Thanks to Dayna and an anonymous commenter for sending this in to me!)

About tonight's game @ NY Islanders: Rob Scuderi will be coming back; Ty Conklin will be in between the pipes, and Pascal Dupuis is taking the night off to be with his wife as they welcome their 3rd child!

GO PENS!!!!

Sid to Return Soon???

I got this tip from a comment left by prflyerchik in the last post. The headline of this story on the Penguins' website is "Crosby's Ankle Getting Stronger," which is good news indeed! It's getting so strong, in fact, that the Saint may be rejoining the Pens' lineup perhaps during this next set of road games:
The strength in Sidney Crosby’s right ankle keeps improving.

And so do his chances of returning to the Penguins’ lineup soon.

Crosby, who had skated alone before practice the past couple days, joined his teammates for Saturday’s morning skate at Mellon Arena. While he won’t be in the lineup Saturday night, he believes he’s close to a return.

We're all more than ready for you to come back, Sid!!!

“I am still trying to practice and get in game shape, but I feel a lot better than I did a week ago, for sure,” he said.

Crosby will accompany the Penguins for their upcoming two-game roadtrip to New York on Monday and New Jersey on Tuesday and it’s possible he could play in one of those games or just continue practicing with his teammates.

“I am going to go on the road, but I am not sure. You never know? It’s really how I feel,” he said. “It’s when I feel good enough to go. Lately, I have been feeling pretty good. So, hopefully I keep improving in the next few days. It’s really depending on that, but I don’t think it’ll take me as long as before.”
Thanks for the good news, prflyerchik!!! :)

Sid Out For A Week

From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
The Penguins announced today that Sidney Crosby will be shut down for a week as he continues to recover from a high ankle sprain. He missed 21 games after injuring the ankle in January and returned for three games before missing Wednesday night's victory over Buffalo.

The Penguins are 12-6-4 without Crosby in the lineup.

Crosby said he would be playing if the team was currently in the playoffs.

"There's no real cure," Crosby said. "Time will heal it."

Still sore.

[...]

His first game back could be Saturday when the Penguins host New Jersey which currently leads the division by one point over the Penguins.

Marian Hossa (knee) said he is hopeful of playing Sunday against the Flyers. Petr Sykora (back) did not practice Friday. Max Talbot (ankle) practiced and said he will play against Philadelphia.
Ugh. Well, it's better to be safe than sorry, and frankly, I'm sort of glad that Sid, who is obviously not 100%, will not be subjected to the Broad Street Bullies on Sunday. They've already shown the hockey world that suspensions don't phase them, and I certainly would not put it past them to target Sid the way a lion targets the injured gazelle. And since our big guns (Gary Roberts & Georges Laraque) are both out (injury and 3-game suspension, respectively), there's not someone there to put out with Sid in case things get nasty. (Don't worry! I didn't forget about Ryan Malone, but he'll have his hands full regulating the jagoffs that screw with Geno.)

DON'T COME BACK AGAIN UNTIL YOU'RE READY, SID.

Also, I wanted to say this for clarification purposes: I finally had a chance to see Laraque's elbowing incident again in a replay - as much as it sucks, he deserves the suspension. He definitely brought his elbow up as he passed Nathan Paetsch, who may miss the rest of the season following the resulting concussion.
I still don't think Laraque was trying to be a thug, but a player has to be in control of his body the entire time he's on the ice, and I know that if someone had done that to Sidney, I'd likely be calling for the offender's head on a platter.

Breaking News: Sid To Sit Out Tonight's Game

Oh no. This is not a test. From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Penguins center Sidney Crosby will not play tonight against Buffalo.

Crosby, the Penguins captain, is experiencing pain in his right ankle. He suffered a high ankle sprain in January and missed 21 games. He returned March 4 and played in three games.

More details to come as I get them. Thanks - I guess (just kidding! LOL) - to Friend of The Show Susan W. for sending me the link.

Two days ago, I found this picture of Sid taken just before he hit the boards on 01-18. It was on a European website, and I thought, "Wow! What a shot - just before the injury happened. Oh well, I won't need pictures like these anymore!" SILLY ME.

On the plus side, this shot CLEARLY shows Sid was looking at the boards just before he hit, so all that talk about his not paying attention to what was in front of him because he was looking to see if he'd drawn a penalty can be put to rest.

Late Edit: From Yahoo! Sports:
Crosby recently missed 21 games with a ligament sprain in the same ankle, an injury commonly known as a high ankle sprain.

Crosby had two goals Sunday against Washington in a 4-2 victory, his first goals in three games since returning from the Jan. 18 injury. He resumed playing March 11 in Tampa, setting up Maxime Talbot’s winning goal with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining in a 2-0 victory.

Crosby has had discomfort in the ankle since the Washington game.

“That game itself was pretty physical,” Crosby said. “It’s probably a combination of that and it’s been sore the past couple of days.”

The Penguins have three days off following Wednesday’s game, and coach Michel Therrien said it made sense for Crosby to sit out and rest up during the break. The Penguins next play Sunday at home against Philadelphia.

“Obviously, it’s a little sore now,” Crosby said. “We have a few more days until our next game. If there is a time to give it a rest, it might be now. … It’s one of those things where you might not get three or four days (off) again in the schedule.”

Asked if he hopes to play Sunday, Crosby said, “That’s what I’m planning on.”
And, in case you haven't heard, Mad Max Talbot will also sit out tonight's game after aggravating his ankle, as well. Marian Hossa is still not ready to return, but SO FAR Petr Sykora is scheduled to be in the line up - despite his questionable status yesterday for back pain. I'll keep you posted if anything changes.

Sid Talks About His Injury and The Trade

* * * LATE EDIT: Additional thanks should go out to Friends XDancexxforxxmeX and John C., who also sent me the link for this article as I was writing my post. :) * * *

Good Friend of The Show Cassie C. sent in a link to an article by Joe Sager for the Pens' website. In it, we get a pseudo-update on Sid's condition:
Sidney Crosby is hitting the road with the Pittsburgh Penguins. But, he’s not sure when he’ll return the lineup. Crosby went through a successful on-ice optional practice session Monday morning at Mellon Arena.

[...]

Crosby, who suffered a high-ankle sprain Jan. 18, was happy to get back on the ice with some of his teammates. However, he’s not sure when he’ll be able to return for game action.

Understatement of the month: I can't wait to see Sid back in action!

“I feel pretty good. I haven’t really had a chance to do much contact. With the way the schedule is, we don’t really practice. We’re pretty much practicing on game days and that’s it,” he said. “So, as an injured guy trying to get back, it’s a little difficult to gauge where you’re at because you’re not really practicing with contact and stuff like that. So, the tough part is knowing when it’s time and also, when it is time, making sure that your skills are there and everything is ready to go. I am not sure where I’m at right now, but time will tell.”
Okay. We've heard this song and dance before, but I must say, after that whole disappearance act he pulled recently, I'm just happy to hear that he's skating again! Soon, though. I just keep telling myself "He'll be back soon." However long it takes, you have to look at the bright side: at least we're nearing the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Also in the article, the Saint FINALLY talks about The Trade:
He’s just happy to get back with the team and hit the road, even though it will be his first voyage without longtime roommate and close friend Colby Armstrong.

“For sure. It gets long watching games here and not traveling. It’s going to be a little different on this trip,” he said. “I’ve been pretty used to having Army beak me for three years on the road and be in my ear, so it’s going to be a little different, but at the same time, it’s going to be nice being with the guys and to get back in that atmosphere.”

[...]

Army hams it up for the Winter Classic team photo shoot.

“It was mixed emotions definitely,” Crosby said. “To get a player like [Hossa], it’s a great opportunity for our team to do some damage, especially up front. Definitely, as players, we have to make sure that we see this opportunity and try to take advantage of it.”

[...]

Still, someone will have to fill Armstrong’s playful role as the person who keeps Crosby on his toes.

“I am sure someone will step up, but not quite to Army’s level, I don’t think,” Crosby said with a laugh. “I couldn’t go a minute without him throwing something in my face. It’ll be a little easier, but I am sure he’ll still remind me.”
So, anyone wanna bet who that person will be? You can leave your guesses in the comments section, but MY money is on MAD MAX TALBOT!!!

Remember this?

FINALLY!!! A Sidney Injury Update!!!

WHEW! It's turning out to be a BUSY, BUSY day in Pens Nation! There was the trade deadline, there's a game in New York tonight at 7:00, and now we FINALLY got what we've all been clamoring for: news about Sid's recovery progress. From Dave Molinari of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Online (since the section of the article about Sid is short, I'm posting it in it's entirety):
Sidney Crosby has abandoned hope of returning to the Penguins' lineup ahead of schedule.

In fact, he still doesn't have a target date for getting back into uniform.

Crosby has been out since getting a high ankle sprain Jan. 18. The initial prognosis was that he would be out 6-to-8 weeks, but Crosby said nine days ago that he hoped to resume playing before that.

Week 6 of his recovery will end Friday, however, and because Crosby didn't accompany the Penguins on the road trip that begins with a game against the New York Islanders tonight at Nassau Coliseum, it's pretty clear he won't play anytime soon.

He's just itching to come back.

The good news for the Penguins is that, after being off the ice since Wednesday, Crosby plans to resume skating this week. He said he stopped not because of a setback in his recovery, but because there was no real point in continuing.

"The purpose of skating was to stay in shape," he said. "Obviously, I knew at some point that I wasn't going to be playing within the next week or so.

"For me to skate for a month before I was going to be back would be pretty useless, wearing myself out for no reason.

"I just realized it's going to be a while. I just have to be patient and not waste energy every day."
Oh, THANK YOU, Dave!!! Thank you for getting Sid to give us a real answer about what's going on. That's all we wanted!

Sid Practicing @ Southpointe

WOW. We are incredibly lucky because we've got fantastic Friends...

Sid's been practicing, and until now, we've been relying on practice videos from Pens TV and split second video clips on TSN to catch a few glimpses of Sid working on his recovery exercises. Tonight, we've got some awesome photos sent in to us by Friend of The Show Michelle B. who watched the Saint in action at the Iceoplex at Southpointe today. Here's what she had to say:
Sid was practicing in the regular full-contact jersey at the Southpointe today and looked a lot more comfortable on the ice. He participated in all the drills and shot around at the end. There was one point where he slid and looked like he hit the boards and everyone in the audience gasped, but he got back up.
YIKES. If I had been there when he slid into the boards, I likely would have passed out. Thankfully he didn't do any (more) damage. Here are the photos Michelle took - click on them to enlarge:

How many Penguins can you identify in this shot?

This is a close up of Sid that I cropped from the previous photo of the entire team. I thought it might help you find Waldo. ;)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing these with us, Michelle!!! :)

Shelley Anderson of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette online had this to say about Sid's return to full contact practice and that sliding-into-the-boards incident:
"He looked really good," coach Michel Therrien said.

At one point, Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang got tangled and fell to the ice. They slid past the net and into the boards, but not heavily.

"That same play the next time could be the one where you get hurt, so you don't want to get too far ahead of yourself, and that's the way I've approached it," Crosby said.

He began skating about two weeks ago and joined the team for practices in a limited capacity nine days ago. There has been no update to his prognosis, which means he's not expected back until at least the end of the month.
Thanks go out to good Friend of The Show Eric B. of The Sidney Crosby Spotlight for sending in the link to that story.

Pens v Sabres tomorrow - okay, later today - @ 6:00pm Eastern. GO PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sid @ Practice

I have video I know many of us have been dying to see - Sid at the Penguins' practices!!! First up, here is footage of the Pens' practice on Tuesday (that's our title man in the yellow "don't hit me" jersey):

Here he is giving an interview after Tuesday's practice:

Now this is a clip of the Saint at Wednesday's practice (Sir Sidney's in a black jersey in this one, although the no-hitting rules remained in place):

And here is the interview after Wednesday's practice:

(Thanks to an anonymous tipster who left the link in the comments for us!)

One last thing before tonight's game: Friend of The Show Magda S. sent us this video of a disenchanted ex-Leafs fan who's looking for a new team to support:
After years of torture and heartbreak, I've decided to leave this abusive relationship as a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

If there is a real team out there that needs a good fan, please email me at noleafsno@un-marketing.com
Here's his explanation for his decision to cut the Leafs loose in his own words:

Hmmm, what team would you recommend that he should throw his support behind? ;) GO PENS!!!!!!!!

An Update On Sid From Max
Breaking News: Sid Returns to Full Practices

Click here to go straight to the breaking news.

That's right, folks! It's time once again for another edition of

This translation once again comes courtesy of our Francophone good Friend of The Show Lisa-Marie W. Thank you very much - or should I say merci beaucoup! - Lisa, for taking the time to type this up for us!!!
For everyone who doesn't know: Sidney has started skating again.

Incredible.

That's the first word that came to my mind when I saw him skating Wednesday morning. He looked alive on the ice.

Sid has a lot of nicknames, but one of them just fits him perfectly right now. Colby Armstrong and I have started calling him 'Creature', because he really is his own species, a phenomenon of sorts.

On Friday the 8th of February, it will have been 3 weeks since Sidney got hurt. It's exceptional for him to be skating already. We call him creature because of his insane fitness, his devotion, and the speed at which his body heals.

Sidney was telling me Wednesday morning that he still has a lot of pain in his ankle, but that's normal. When I sustained a similar injury, I tried to get on the ice 5 or 6 times a day. Knowing Sidney, he'll be out there 12 times a day. He always pushes it to the maximum. It's simple. When Sidney comes back to the game, he'll just be in even better shape than he was before the injury.

His morale is good. He's really happy to be skating again, and every step of progress is even better for his morale.

Because I've been there already, I try and give him some advice to stay patient and take his time to get back to 100% again. But in the same breath--things are looking really good for him, and for us too.
The Kid - Creature, haha - never ceases to amaze me. Having had a myriad of problems with my own right foot, I can tell you from experience that foot injuries are insanely difficult to heal. That's why, despite my excitement, I have been a little worried since I heard the Saint was skating again. Sure a speedy recovery is what we've all been hoping for Sid, but I certainly didn't want to see him pushing himself too hard and return too soon. (Frankly, I am still in shock that less than three weeks after his injury, he has already been able to even strap on his skates!) But after hearing Max's account of Sid's recovery, I think we can all feel a little more confident that Sid is doing what's best for his body as well as his mind. After all, a happy, healthy Sid is what we're all waiting for, right?

* * * * *
BREAKING NEWS: So, as I'm typing this post, I see that Joshua (who seems as stoked as I am for Sid's return) has left a comment on the Sidney's Skating post: "SIDNEY CROSBY PARTICIPATING IN FULL PRACTICES OFFICIALLY AS OF FEB 8TH!!!!!!" He also included a link to this article on The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's website:
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby participated in a full practice today for the first time since Jan. 18, when he injured his ankle in a loss to Tampa Bay.

Crosby was expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks with a high right ankle sprain.
I AM STUNNED. I'll quote Lisa here: "Screw Creature, this guy's Superman." AMEN, sister! Perhaps The Sidney Crosby Show (the real one, not this one - haha) is going to resume even sooner than anyone could have ever dreamed...

Pens v Islanders (W 4-3)

Okay. Remember that Sid wore a jersey with a special Hockey Fights Cancer logo patch during the January 12th game against the Atlanta Thrashers? Well, the auction has ended and some crazy lucky person is now in debt for a staggering $15,000. Longtime Friend of The Show Eric B. of The Sidney Crosby Spotlight has all the details.

Now, this is going to be a long recap because tonight's game was a heated division rivalry game, and tons of stuff happened. We even got a few Sidney updates!!! As for the game itself, it was rough - pretty much no check went unfinished. Early in the game, the second line (Max "SUPERSTAR" Talbot, Erik Christensen, and Jordan Staal) got a few really good chances, but Rick DiPietro stopped them all. Evgeni Malkin went to hit an Isle but ended up going down in a weird way. He went to the bench and put a bag of ice on his lower lip. Newly recalled Islander Jeremy Colliton made his presence felt with a huge hit on Daryl Sydor; just afterwards, an Islander drilled Jordan Staal into the boards. Josef Vasicek finally took the first shot for the Isles, but Ty Conklin blocked him. However, just a few minutes later, Conks came out to play the puck. He found himself in the no play zone in the corner. (You see where this is going, right?) He couldn't get back in front of the net in time. The Pens' defensemen stayed motionless behind the net like deer caught in the headlights as Mike Comrie got the pass from the corner and pushed the puck into the empty net. [Pens 0, Isles 1] It was the kind of thing that makes you so mad that you want to slam your own hand in the car door.

That's going to hurt tomorrow.

Then FSN Pittsburgh cut to a shot of Sidney sitting in Mario's luxury box (which looks awfully crowded tonight). He appeared to be sending a text message. Later, Kris Letang worked like a dog to get the puck out of the Penguins' zone. He must have tried to clear the puck at least 5 or 6 times. Finally he was able to clear it and draw a tripping penalty on Sean Bergenheim. During the first few seconds of the Pens' power play, Ryan Malone was robbed of a goal by DiPietro. Aaah, but the Isles didn't get the puck out of the zone. Petr Sykora got the puck and sent it straight to Ryan Whitney, who promptly sent it right past DiPietro. Now, if you weren't aware, Coach Michel Therrien was, um, not exactly thrilled with Whit's performance in the last game. He publicly called the defenseman out following the blown lead loss to the Devils. Whit accepted responsibility like a man saying, "I have been with him for four years. It is tough love a lot of the time. Whether it is behind a closed door or through (the media), it doesn't really matter. The message is sent, and I understand where he is coming from."

Whitney must have really taken Therrien's tongue lashing as constructive criticism, as he scored 2 goals and an assist and earned the Player of the Game.
(That's him in the upper left corner. He's the effing player of the game, and as of 11:00pm Eastern, this is the best picture I can find of him from tonight's game.)

Then Comrie and Talbot dropped their gloves and helmets. It was basically a stalemate at first, until Comrie attempted to slewfoot Max. The men exchanged a few blows, with Max going down to his knee at one point then quickly getting back up to deliver a hard punch to Comrie's head. Comrie went down and the men were separated and penalized. Staal later tried to get a breakaway, but he just couldn't get around Aaron Johnson. Johnson would pay for that, though, when seconds later he was drilled into the boards by Big Georges Laraque. As FSN returned from commercial, they showed footage of Sid skating this morning. He had on his equipment and was carrying a stick doing laps around the rink. Therrien stated that he was "more than pleased" with Sid's progress. Friend of The Show Allison Y. hooked me up again with a link to a story about Sid's unchanged prognosis. It looks like people heard Sid was skating again and automatically assumed he'd be rejoining the Pens soon. The official status of his return remains the same as the day it was issued. He is not expected back until sometime in March.

Conks just makes the save.

Malone was getting close to making something happen when the net came up from behind on DiPietro to stop the play. Then Geno tried to set up Malone, but he was back checked before he could make the pass. Vasicek tried to score on Conks from the corner, but Conks made the save. Army broke his stick so for a few moments it was as if the Isles had a power play. Fortunately the Pens were able to get the puck out of their own zone. The first period ended with a 1-1 draw.

During the intermission, Bob Errey spoke with athletic trainer Chris Stuart about the dreaded high ankle sprain. The treatment, Stuart said, is to immobilize the ankle for 10 to 14 days then gradually increase the movement of the ankle over a period of days or weeks. They again showed Sidney in Mario's box; this time he was chatting away on his cell phone.

The second period began with Rob Scuderi taking a stick to the bridge of his nose. They showed a closeup of the nasty cut as it was bleeding. (He would return to the ice for his next shift.) Just off the next faceoff, the puck was sent to Whit out at the blue line. He sent it sailing on goal. Malone stuck his stick out and deflected the puck right through DiPietro's 5-hole. [Pens 2, Isles 1]

Today a forward, tomorrow a father. (Congrats to the Malones from TSCS!!!)

Shortly afterwards, a small scrum developed between the teams in the corner. Former and current Pen Kris Beech (who finally got a visa) was then called for tripping. On the Isles' power play, Staal took the puck and was able to wind around the Isles defensemen but at the last minute was poke checked by DiPietro. Ruslan Fedotenko made the Pens pay by shooting the puck into the net just below Conklin's glove. [Pens 2, Isles 2]

DiPietro poke checks Staal.

Later, Conks blocked a shot by an Islander. The puck then rolled through the blue paint and past an open spot. Fortunately Sergei Gonchar was there to gain control and clear the puck. Then Andy Sutton went to the box for interference. On the ensuing power play, Geno took a shot that DiPietro blocked but didn't cover. Whit showed us how it's done by scoring on the rebound. [Pens 3, Isles 2] The second line played like a bunch of beasts for the entire game. That mix of Crusher, Staal, and Max is really amazing. Twice they were able to come thisclose to scoring (damn you, DiPietro!!!), but they did draw a penalty for their efforts. Sutton found himself back in the box, this time for hooking. Even though Beech had a nice looking shot from his knees, the Pens did not score on this power play. Brendan Witt took a hard slapshot from the blue line that hit Colby Armstrong in the leg. He was definitely hurting, but like the trooper he is, he later returned for his next shift. The second period ended with the Pens ahead by a goal.

Max and Frans Nielsen collide.

The first five minutes of the third period were pretty uneventful. There was a lot of up and down action, but nothing happened that stood out. Then Staal absolutely plastered Sutton into the boards, and Beech made another really nice pass to Army. Army backhanded the puck on goal, but DiPietro blocked the shot. Laraque then slammed into Richard Park, almost sending him over the boards in front of the Penguins' bench. FSN then showed footage of Mario (who's rumored to be in the best shape of his life, haha) skating in this morning's skate with a child who is fighting the same disease that Mario conquered (Hodgkin's disease). The encounter was orchestrated by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Pens celebrate a goal.

Staal had a wide open shot on DiPietro, but his shot hit the crossbar!!! Then Geno set Sykora up with a nice centering pass, but the puck came off the heel of Sykora's stick and had no speed behind it. Army was assessed a tripping penalty. On the Islanders' power play, Comrie went top shelf on Conks to tie the game with single digit seconds left on Army's penalty. [Pens 3, Isles 3] Geno later ran right over Witt. As the two men returned to their skates, Geno grabbed at the back of his leg. We thought for a minute that he was hurt, but then he simply continued playing, so I assume he's okay. Then with just 3:39 left on the clock, Letang decided to mimic Comrie's last goal: DiPietro was down low on the shortside as Letang shot the puck from the corner up and over DiPietro's shoulder. [Pens 4, Isles 3]

Army laid a big hit on Johnson. Just before the one minute mark, DiPietro was pulled in favor of the extra attacker. On the next faceoff (which the Pens didn't win), Crusher hurried to steal the puck and pass it to Staal. Staal went down the ice towards the empty net, but he was surrounded by Islanders. He pulled the trigger and just missed the empty net by inches. The Isles took it back down on Conks. He threw out his arm and covered the puck. The ref whistled the play down. The Isles meanwhile were still stabbing away at the puck. It squirted out of Conklin's grasp and into the back of the net. The goal was immediately waived off. Upon the replay, it was really, really a close call. It wasn't crystal clear if Conks had successfully frozen the puck, and the puck met the net at about the same time as the whistle blew. Fortunately for us, the ref's ruling stood. There was a mere 0.4 second left for the faceoff. The Pens got 2 points in a HUGE division win. They are now tied with the Flyers for first place.

Sidney's Skating!!!

From Shelley Anderson of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Penguins center Sidney Crosby began skating this week while the team was on the road and did so again today before the team's practice at Mellon Arena. There is no indication that the timetable for his return has changed. Crosby, out with a high ankle sprain, is expected back in March. (First published on February 6, 2008 at 11:37 am)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Who knew news of someone I don't actually know going ice skating would make me so happy?!

Big, BIG thanks to Friend of The Show Allison Y. for sending me the link that made my day!!! :)

So Just What Was Sid Looking At?

Monday's Penguins Q&A with Dave Molinari (The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) dealt with - what else? - Sid's injury. A reader named Kim from Canada asked Molinari if Sid's full-on style of play is a bit too reckless. Molinari's response follows:
Crosby doesn't leave his feet, whether it's to go into a full-fledged sprawl or simply to drop to one knee, because he's interested in making it into the day's highlights show. He does it when he believes that's the way to maximize his chances of making a particular play, usually to capitalize on a scoring opportunity.

As Crosby discovered (or perhaps was reminded) last Friday night, there are risks to leaving one's feet, but it's worth noting that he didn't do it voluntarily, having had his skates taken out from under him. Remember, Tampa Bay defenseman Paul Ranger picked up a slashing minor on the play.

Also, there did not appear to be anything particularly ominous about the sequence that ended with Crosby getting a high ankle sprain. He wasn't moving particularly fast -- there have been times when he's hit the boards so hard, one half-expects him to burst into flames -- and seemed to have ample time to prepare for the impact he knew was coming.

Unfortunately for Crosby, there are indications his focus shifted as he was nearing the boards, quite possibly because he wanted to see how the play that was now behind him finished, and his right skate ended up in an awkward position when he made contact.

That was a painful (for Crosby) and costly (for him and the team) lesson, but don't expect it to change the way Crosby goes about his work. Next time he's in a game, he'll leave his feet in a nanosecond if he believes that's the right play to make.
I was originally going to quote a section of Molinari's response, but in light of what my husband saw on television yesterday, I thought I should print it in its entirety. You see, being that I do live in the dead center of Pennsylvania, I am fortunate enough (or unfortunate - depending on your point of view) to get T.V. stations from both the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia markets. Yesterday, he was watching a replay of the Flyers/Devils game. The intermission report featured a segment about Sir Sidney's injury. One of the sportscasters made the comment that Sid went down because he wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him, which is 100% true. You can clearly see in the video that Sid's head is turned away from the boards (until he hits them, of course). The sportscaster then went on to offer his own opinion as to why Sid was looking back: because he wanted to make sure he had drawn the penalty on the play. (I wish I had a link or a YouTube clip of the segment for you. If anyone has it, let me know.)

Now, as we establish at the top of the page in the longest header on the Internet, we don't know Sid. At all. Never met him. Ever. BUT I can tell you that the world's best hockey player is NOT going to risk injury checking to see if he's drawn a penalty. This is a kid that will take a high stick and ignore it to keep cycling the puck on a delayed penalty. He's certainly not going to look back at the ref for a penalty signal while speeding towards the boards on his arse. Any hockey player worth his salt knows that he is extremely vulnerable when he is off his feet. All control of forward motion is lost. Sid may be a lot of things... Stupid isn't one of them. For the record, I'm with Molinari: Most likely Sid was looking back to keep track of the whereabouts of that puck.

Now here's something for a laugh before our big game against the Flyers tonight. First, I'm sure you remember this quote from Andrew Ference:
Jarome in my books is a better hockey player than Crosby because he does those things. He will fight, he will lay his body on the line and take the hit and not complain if someone hits him and stuff like that. The superstars of the league should have to do that because they're hockey players, they're not ice-skating princesses. Hockey is an emotional game, you have to stand up for yourself. You have to stand up for your actions. If you punch somebody in the face, then you should fight, that's the way hockey is suppose to be.
Well, it inspired good Friend of The Show Cassie C., who apparently has waaaay too much time on her hands (Just kidding! You know I ♥ you, girl!), to create this:

High Ankle Sprains Explained

I'll get to the high ankle sprain in a minute, but first I wanted to let our regular Friends of The Show know that I've created a resource center for all the updates posted here on TSCS regarding Sidney's ankle injury. I put it together yesterday because we're getting a lot of new readers who are finding the site by searching "Sidney Crosby injury." (I wanted to make it easier for them to search for the information they're trying to find.) You can visit the Sidney Crosby Injury Monitor by clicking on the picture of the bandaged ankle on the right side of your screen.

So what exactly is the difference between a plain old ankle sprain and a high ankle sprain, you ask? Well, Bob Newell of The Pittsburgh-Tribune Review created this graphic to better explain the difference:

I then found this article on USGyms.net that explains the high ankle sprain and treatments for the condition in much greater detail. I've quoted the most important points for you:
A "high" (syndesmotic) ankle sprain is caused by an outward twisting of the foot and ankle. This is opposite of a typical ankle sprain where the foot and ankle are twisted inward. Football, soccer and basketball are the most common sports associated with a high ankle sprain. Proper stretching and training may help prevent some "high" (syndesmotic) ankle sprains.

[...]

Most "high" (syndesmotic) ankle sprains can be treated in a manor similar to typical ankle sprains with PRICE. P: Protection from further injury via a splint, R: Rest, I: Icing, C: Compression wrapping, E: Elevation. Syndesmotic sprains, however, will require much longer to heal and will also need more physical therapy to strengthen the muscles around the ankle.

Rehabilitation can begin a few days after the injury, when the swelling starts to go down. There are three goals to aim for in rehabilitation: 1. Restore motion and flexibility, 2. Restore strength, 3. Restore balance.

[...]

Return to sports only after you have met these goals:
  1. You have full range of motion in all directions (up and down, side to side, and in and out).
  2. You have good strength in all muscles around the ankle.
  3. You have good balance.
  4. You have no pain or swelling with exercise or activity.
Sidney is expected to be out 6 to 8 weeks, but don't be shocked if it ends up taking longer than that. These types of injuries are very unpredictable. Healing requires time and rest. It will undoubtedly test Sid's patience (and ours!), but the most important thing is that he doesn't come back too hastily. I'm pretty confident the Penguins' medical staff will not let that happen. And who knows - perhaps he'll surprise us all with a speedy 4-week recovery period! I know, I know: It's not likely, but a girl can hope, right? Just keep your fingers crossed...

Video - Sid's Injury Update Press Conference

HA! They're keeping me busy today! Here is the video of the press conference:

Sid Talks About His Injury

Today Sidney spoke with The Associated Press regarding his prognosis:
Sidney Crosby’s high ankle sprain will force him to miss Sunday’s NHL All-Star game and six to eight weeks of the season, a major setback that means the Pittsburgh Penguins must play most of their remaining schedule without the league’s marquee player.

“I was hoping three to four weeks would be the most,” Crosby said, talking Tuesday for the first time since he was hurt.

The Saint talks to the press.

Crosby said he must be careful not to rush back and “tweak it a lot, and then we’re back to square one. ... Right now, it’s all about healing.”

Team physician Charles Burke confirmed the injury was a high ankle sprain, but Crosby said there was no bone damage, which would have meant an even longer layoff.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” the 20-year-old Crosby said of the injury, the worst he’s had since he began his hockey career. “It’s going to be mentally tough as we go along [and I can’t play].”

We all feel your pain, Sid.

“The pain has eased a little as it goes along,” said Crosby, who can’t do his normal conditioning and strength-building routine while he is hurt.

“But I can’t go into the dressing room pouting, or be in a grumpy mood,” Crosby said. “I can’t be coming in every day like that. I can’t feel sorry for myself. I have to be there to support the team.”
And the fans will be supporting the Pens while you're gone right along side you, Sid!!! This will be the longest break from hockey Sid's ever had. (Prior to this, the longest break came when he didn't play for two weeks with a shoulder injury in his days before he was a Penguin.)

Injury News - It's Not Good

This was just posted on the Penguins' website:
Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby will be sidelined six to eight weeks due to a high ankle sprain.

Crosby was re-evaluated by Pittsburgh Penguins team doctor Chip Burke on Tuesday morning and further testing confirmed his high ankle sprain. Crosby suffered the injury in the first period of the Jan. 18 against Tampa Bay.
Wow.

Another Injury Update

Well, folks - and we all knew this was coming - Sid was placed on the injured reserve list today. The status change was made retroactive to the date he was injured (01-18-08). It is a formality that means he will be out for at least seven days.

With a high ankle sprain, however, you can reasonably expect him to be out anywhere from 4 weeks (like Max Talbot) to 8 weeks (like Marc-Andre Fleury). Here is the latest news on his condition from The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
Sidney Crosby should know soon how much time he will miss with an ankle injury.

Crosby, the Penguins' captain, will be re-evaluated by team doctors Tuesday, and the club is optimistic it will receive a prognosis for his expected recovery from a high right ankle sprain.
I'll post the prognosis as soon as it becomes available. The Pens face the Caps tonight at 7:30pm Eastern. The game will be broadcast on the Versus network. GO PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
