Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire Rights To Two Pens

From NHL.com:
The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired the rights to left wings Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts from Pittsburgh in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2009, owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie announced.

“We said earlier this week we would be aggressive in our pursuit of free agents in order to win and compete,” Koules said. “This trade today doesn’t guarantee anything, but we believe it gives us a leg up in our attempt to sign these two impact players.”
OOOOHHHH BOY, Tampa Bay is going to be gooood this coming season. The Penguins picked up a conditional draft pick in 2009 for the trade. If the Lightning is able to sign Bugsy, the Pens' draft pick will be Tampa Bay's pick in the third round. If the Lightning cannot sign him, the Pens' will get Dallas's fourth round pick.

Yikes! I'm not looking forward to having either of these guys on the opposite bench. But it's just part of the business, and now I will take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to both Robs and Bugsy. Thanks for everything. You'll be missed.

Thanks to grriamafrog for leaving the link in the last post's comments section.

Ugh...why can't the Pens just attempt to sign Ryan Malone...

However upset and sad this makes me, I'll join Jodie in wishing the best of luck to both Bugsy and Gary...GOOD LUCK GUYS!!

I think it's a smart move, both of these guys were pretty much as good as gone. I wanted to see Malone signed, but I don't want to see the Pens bury themselves with too many huge contracts, and in the end maybe they can't afford him. At least this way they get something in return, instead of just losing them outright.

I don't think Shero would have traded Malone's rights if there was any chance of signing him, so it must have been clear that he wasn't going to stay.

Malone's foot was out the door.
I'm sure they attempted to sign him
I'm also sure that Malone shut it down

I'm sorry he's gone but
He wasn't consistent enough to earn what he was probably asking for on a team like the Penguins.

If he goes elsewhere, he'll be top dog and get lots of cash, cuz let's face it, teams like Columbus, TB, Canucks, etc...all looking for good people.

Good luck to him but don't forget we've still got most of our team left (knock on wood).

So while you're missing Malone (which is perfectly natural) remember that he, too, chose to leave it to July 1st.

Mutual agreements.

GO PENS

I got a text message about this a little earlier confirming this. And like you said, Jodie, I'm not looking forward to having those guys on the opposite bench. However, (and I rarely would say anything like this) Tampa Bay is the closest NHL team to me, making it my "home" team, so I'll have opprotunities to see many games with them. However, I'd much rather them be on the Pens, considering that I will always be a dedicated Pens fan no matter where I live. Best of luck to them, though.

I know its upsetting to see both of these guys leave but you have to think of it this way, this was just one year Malone did really good and Gary Roberts admitted during the season that if he skates to hard he gets anmonia really easily and he was also injured during the playoffs. i wish these guys good luck, know we have to think about Hossa!!

@ ali & allydog- the rumormill (take it or leave it!) had it that almost from the get go malone really wasn't pleased that they weren't going to make him a priority after all of his growth, so he peaced out to find a better deal. it seems a bit out of "character" (whatever we can know from the internet and press), but i suppose we may never know the full story. same with hossa and orpik.

i love me some bugsy, but i'm sure he will get his chance to shine a little more on another team, and that is nice to see. it's also nice to know that him and roberts could be together. who knows if it makes a difference to them, but i'd like to think it helps these guys make the adjustment to another team if they've got a friend.

I wonder if the whole Tampa Bay thing is gonna weird Sid out, since he's superstitious. Isn't that the team they were playing when he hurt his ankle and also when he came back?

I was kinda hoping both would get sent to a Western conference team, just so that the Pens wouldn't have to play against them too often.

Urgh.

UGH! Tampa Bay is getting two outstanding players.

This SUCKS! :(

I think Tampa Bay is going to end up being pretty decent team next year, whether or not they sign Malone or Roberts. Stamkos will center a second line...and they have Lecavlier and St. Louis...not bad not bad. Should make for a little bit more interesting of a Southeastern Conference...

correction - tampa gets the RIGHTS to two outstanding players... they still have to sign them or Tampa loses them.

and frankly for a team who won the cup 4 years ago (Remember THAT?) they've sucked every year since so if they can sign one of the two, it'll do more than a little to get them back up to a decent team.

But I do wish them the best, and I hope that they like wherever it is that they end up. :)

Bugsy and Roberts Close to Signing It looks as if the Pens will get the third round pick. I wish both Malone and Roberts good luck in Tampa.

Yep -- I kind of get depressed everytime I get online to check on the Pens FA statuses...

Looks like Malone & Roberts are pretty close to signing in Tampa...

Seems like Orpik & Ruutu are going to test free agency...hhhmmm...Am I being optimistic hoping for one of them to come back???

Whatever happens in the end, I get the feeling that the Pens will have quite a different look next year...

Ryan SAID he is going into free agency. Just stick to that, for heaven's sakes, so that Vancouver can sign you!

Malone signed a 7 year, $31.5 million contract with TB. I'm glad Shero didn't waste money & cap space overpaying Malone.

Agreed. That's way overpriced.

Et tu, Ruutu?

Dude, when are we gonna sign someone? lol

June 29, 2008 10:58 PM
Blogger mer said...

'et tu ruutu.'

michelle - seriously, what part of your brain comes up with this stuff? because i want it.

31.5M is a lot of cap space eaten up, Tampa can afford it because they're getting Stamkos cheap for a couple years, but i think the Pens are better off with the extra cash...

Jodie's right though - Tampa's shaping up to be GOOOOD this season - it's about time someone gave Washington a run for their money in the Southeast.

Speaking of Tampa Bay being good next year... Headlines in Minnesota: "Rolston dealt to Tampa: Free agent winger traded for conditional draft pick." We'll see if Tampa can do it in a day.

Ryan Signed a deal for 7 years, worth more than 31 million, which means about 4.5 million a year.
Gary signed a one year deal for 2 million.

I'm definitely going to be missing them both a lot, but hopefully this means we have a shot at Hossa.

This is extremely off-topic but for the Summer Project is it absolutely essential to have your country's flag in the picture if the picture has red, white and blue in it or a very recognizable national landmark. Thanks

Think the Pens will actually sign any of their free agents at this rate?

I can't take it anymore. Let's get this over with. This is way to stressful!!!!!!!

I think Ray may have missed the boat and put to many of his eggs in the Hossa basket. Hope I'm wrong though.

Tampa has the potential to be scary good if they are smart...

this should be interesting if nothing else, but i'm not looking forward to playing them.

So the news report Jody quoted here says 7-8 mill in the first two years. Why? It comes out to 4.5 so why are they reporting 7-8? Does anybody get this?

@clare
you can take your picture however you want. if you'd rather use a landmark than a flag, that's cool with me. :)

@anon 12:18am
because the way the contract is structured, malone will get $7 million for the upcoming season, and $8 million for the following season. the remaining $16.5 million over the last five seasons of his deal with the lightning.
