Repeat After Me - "In Shero We Trust"

After the lows (the shocking news of Marian Hossa's departure) and highs (Geno's 5 year extension) we went through yesterday, it looks like we've got another reason to celebrate today. We've locked up the Flower!!! From TSN.ca:
A day after signing core players Evgeni Malkin and Brooks Orpik to long term deals, the Pittsburgh Penguins took care of their goaltender on Thursday.

Sources tell TSN Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a seven year, $35 million extension.

The deal includes a no-move and limited no-trade clause that triggers in 2010-2011

The no-move prevents the Penguins from placing Fleury on waivers, while the limited no-trade still allows for some flexibility with Fleury controlling the list of teams he would consider in the event Pittsburgh wants to trade him.
SWEET! :) For this one, I'll send you over to The Flower Shop for a little celebratory post from good Friend of The Show Loser Chris.

After Hossa bailed for Detroit, we begged for a winger for Sidney. Well, now Shero got us two - the Pens signed Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko to patch the hole Hossa left. Also from TSN.ca:
Both deals are one-year contracts, with Satan earning $3.5 million next year and Fedotenko $2.5 million.

Miroslav Satan
(From Wikipedia: The proper Slovak pronunciation of his name is "SHAH-than", but North Americans usually pronounce it "Shuh-TAN".
)
Haha, I've always used the latter pronunciation. I didn't realize it was incorrect until I searched for the best way to type out the pronunciation for you and found this information... Whoops!

Satan, twice selected to the All-Star game, scored 16 goals and added 25 assists in 80 games last season for the New York Islanders. The native of the Czech Republic has 685 points in 947 career NHL games.

Ruslan Fedotenko
(pronounced ROOS-lahn FED-uh-TENK-oh)

Fedotenko marked 16 goals and 17 assists in just 67 games last season, also for the Islanders. Fedotenko was sidelined for parts of the year with a knee injury.
Maybe neither one is a comparable match to Hossa, but they're both pretty good players in their own rights. Remember that both Sid and Geno have the uncanny ability to make guys around them better players (Tampa Bay is about to find this out with Ryan Malone), so I think these two guys will fit in nicely. It looks like Shero did have a few backup plans after all, so we'll just have to wait to see how this all plays out in the end. Shero's next move may just be a contract extension for GRONK! No matter what happens, the Pens are going to have a different look next season, and sometimes different is better. :)

Before I forget, both the Saint and Geno are up for ESPY awards. Some of you mentioned it in the comments sections of the last couple of posts, but I keep forgetting to add it to a post. Now you guys need to VOTE FOR SID AND GENO!!! (Use my link - the one on the Pens' website is broken.) Thanks to Friends of The Show Narmeen A. and Susan W. for sending me the emails that reminded me to post this! ;)

You can thank Friend Bobby T. for this picture. It's from the latest Hockey News. Click it to enlarge it for the wallpaper size.

Friend Jennifer B. sent in a tip for us:
Didja know that there is a free Penguins podcasts on itunes? It's called Penguins Rink Rat Report. If you put that in the search box when the results come up you'll want to hit "subscribe" it should give you access to all the podcasts for the entire 2007-2008 season. The most recent podcasts are interviews with each of the draft prospects and then one from today with Ray Shero. There's no way for me to give you a link, unfortunately so if you have trouble finding it let me know. I do know that even if someone doesn't have an iPod, you can access iTunes and download the podcasts.
I highly recommend downloading iTunes and subscribing - there are some really good interviews on these Podcasts.

Also - don't forget to send in your pictures for our TSCS Summer Project! I'd love to see some pics of you guys sporting your Pens gear in front of exploding fireworks, hint hint! But remember, the only "requirement" is that you have something Penguins-related in a picture with something related to your city, state, province, and/or country.

Thanks to all the Friends who helped out with today's post!

I'm happy with the signings Shero made...I think these guys could have stellar seasons playing with Geno and Sid...!!! I'm really excited to see how the Pens play in the new season...I'm feeling optimistic...cautiously optimistic... :)

92 more days...not that long at all.

Oh, and I'm still all for resigning Jeff Taffe...

satan and fedetenko are solid, and sid and geno will make them better.

i am SO happy about Fleury (and for him!), but completely unsurprised. none of this shopping for the best deal bullshit, he's a Pen through and through. As long as we don't rely on him like the Canucks rely on Luongo, he'll be in top form and i think we'll get to keep him for a long time.

help -- can someone help figure out what jersey size i am? i don't want to have to go all the way down to the damn Canucks store and try one on... i'm like 5'7" and 38" bust, and I want it comfy but i don't want to be drowning in it... suggestions?

@mer - I'm in the exact same situation as you -- I really want a jersey, but have no idea what size I am...NO IDEA!! Especially when I'm ordering online...

My earlier comment on the post below talked about me being happy ESPN didn't rub salt in the Hossa wound...I actually just saw them talking about it - the one guy was like, "Well - Hossa made an idiotic move." haha...

HAHA =) YAY! Someone agrees with Pens fans. Hossa will realize that he made a bad move.. maybe. Hossa might not be as good because he won't have Sidney to serve the puck to him on a silver platter =)

@ali - a TON of blogs and columnists are saying the exact same thing...

and i'm getting a normal jersey not one of the women's ones... or worse, *shudder* the pink ones - no offence if anyone has one but WHYYYYYY? for the love of god? what is so wrong with black and gold?

anyone out there got an XS men's jersey?

i'm sad to see BGL go. :(

for mer and ali: find your jersey size.

i don't mind the ladies' cut jerseys, so long as they're not pink and they don't have swarovski crystals on them. those jerseys are simply abhorrent and actually borderline on the demeaning side. "ooh, i'm a girl, everything has to be sparkly and pink!!!" hmmph! reebok can bite me.

Yeah - I'm not a big fan of the pink ones...actually they are pretty disgusting...

off topic pink discussion coming... like, in the US Olympic gymnastic trials the other week, all the gymnasts were wearing red, white, and blue usa outfits, except for one girl who had this weird pink usa suit...seriously...it was awful.

Sorry about that...Do you guys think that all these rumors about Jagr are going to come true?? I've read that Sydor/Scuderi are on the trading block...I guess, some D has to go...

as much as i'd really like to think positively here, i'm going to keep it real and say that i don't think the pens will do as good this upcoming season as they did this last year

i don't know much about the newcomers, but the people im sad to see go are laraque, malone, hossa, roberts, and ruttuu. which is pretty much everyone. actually i think it is everyone.

i just don't feel that the penguins are the same without those guys. maybe i just have to get used to it a bit.

BUT SID IS STILL HERE!!!!!!!

Staal
Dupuis
Gonchar
Kennedy
Taffe
Talbot
Sykora
Letang
Eaton
Godard
Satan
Fedotenko
Gill (?)

And the maybes...
Sydor?
Scuderi?

It's not like we're going to drop to the bottom of the eastern conference with the current roster...

exactly, mer. and who at this time last year would have guessed that we were going to snag hossa at the trade deadline? you never know how things are going to work out... the one constant seems to be shero's ability to take the lemons and make lemonade. i'm not worried about them at all. as long as they've got sid and geno, shero will find guys to fill in the blanks.

The pens are a worse team now than they were at the end of last season, but I don't think they are necessarily worse than they were at the START of last season. And yes, anything can happen and change through the year. Plus I can only expect Sid and Geno to get better and better.

But I think the biggest problem is how good Detroit is. I mean, who is going to beat these guys now? Hopefully that Stanley Cup hangover hits them REAL hard:)

By the way, the Jagr rumors are really heating up. Word is Mario has been talking to Jagr quite a bit and the penguins are his first choice destination. Only problem is there is not enough cap room for even a 1 year contract.

your project picture can be whatever you want it to be. it can have any past players you want...

...as long as it doesn't have anything to do with marian hossa. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

seriously, though, i'm just kidding. if you've got hossa in there, it's okay. this project was inspired by an appreciation for all the pens did for us this season, and hossa was a big part of that.

@ clare - thanks!

woah! wait a sec! how is Gronk making 2.2M with an entry level contract? is that right?

July 4, 2008 1:13 AM
Blogger mer said...

okay, confused. so his salary is down as 850,000$ (which makes sense) so why does it have him down as 2.2 towards the Pens' cap?

Satan is from Slovak Republic!!!Just like Hossa...just to let you know about the mistake in the text.

I think the salary cap link got Eric Goddard's salary and the Gronk's mixed up. Eric Goddard has a $2.2 mill 3 year contract, not $750,000 one. I think that's where everyone's getting confused. They should fix that though.

And I think, even with the guys we lost, that the Pens will still be a great team. We've got Fleury in goal, Geno and Sid as centers for two lines. We've got the Gronk, Orpik, Whitney and Talbot too. Plus many others. I think we'll be fine. Shero has always got the job done.

To all you women out there looking for Pens gear that fits, try looking at the Youth stuff! I routinely buy Youth sizes if the women's things are lacking. Which, seriously, I also find the pink and sparkly offensive. I can get away with Youth sizes L and XL in jerseys, if I want them to fit like jerseys, adn even smaller if I want them to fit like shirts, and XL in t-shirts. I'm 5'6", 145 lbs., 36" bust. Of course, it didn't help me when I was looking for Sykora stuff, but for the Big Name guys, it's great, and CHEAPER!

July 4, 2008 8:24 AM
Blogger Clare said...

@ Mer I believe bonuses count towards the cap because there is a rookie maximum contract but then with all of the different bonuses it brings up their cap hit.

@Stephanie I completely agree about the youth sizes. I am only 5'3" so I don't feel like I am drowning.

HAHAHA the mullet stuff is priceless.

so glad we didn't sign jagr. sorry, but it's true.

i'm sad about BGL mainly because he was such an extraordinary guy. a generous person you can't help but love, which obviously rubs off on other players.

July 4, 2008 2:28 PM
Blogger Clare said...

@ Mer If Jordan has a good agent then he could have gotten any number of bonuses. For example for the three years of Patrick Kane's entry level contract his base salary is 850,000 but his cap hit is 3.725 because he would have gotten a bonus for winning rookie of the year, leading rookies in points and will get bonuses this year and the year after for different accomplishments. Jordan may get different bonuses than last year and the year before but his agent and the Penguins may have negotiated the same dollar amount for the bonuses. If you couldn't tell I aspire to be an NHL agent.

July 4, 2008 2:39 PM
Blogger mer said...

@ clare - if Kane got that kind of bonus, it totally makes sense that Jordan could have gotten something similar for being nominated for the Calder...

i guess i'm just so used to being a starving student that a 1.35M bonus seems so completely out of my range of comprehension ;)
