Sidney Crosby continued his assault on the record books – this time in Latvia.

Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 18-year-old rookie superstar, became the youngest player in IIHF World Championship history to capture the tournament’s scoring title. Crosby racked up 16 points in nine games for Canada, which finished fourth in the prestigious tournament.

Crosby, who was one of Canada’s alternate captains, scored at least one point in Canada’s first eight games. The entire team was shutout by Finland in the bronze medal game. He finished with a tournament-best eight goals and eight assists. He scored his eight goals on just 25 shots, for an amazing shooting percentage of 32 percent.

For his efforts, Crosby was named the tournament’s top forward and was chosen for the media all-star team.

Crosby, the 2005 first-overall draft choice, established a new NHL record with the Penguins this season when he became the youngest player to score 102 points in league history. Crosby finished his rookie NHL season sixth in overall scoring. He had 39 goals and led all rookies with 63 assists in 81 games played.
